What to do immediately following storm:

Phoenix Restoration is a trusted resource when it comes to what a homeowner should do after suspected hail or wind damage.

Hailstorms can be scary for homeowners. Your roof is the first line of defense against the weather outside, and severe hail damage can compromise that defense overnight. If your home has just weathered a hailstorm, it’s hard to know what to do first.

Here’s Some Suggestions Following a Storm.

The critical damage caused by lightning strikes, fallen trees, large hail, torrential waters, and high wind are common threats to your home’s structural integrity after a storm. Although this damage may not be readily apparent, it can cost a homeowner their savings if not addressed promptly. Here are some suggestions on what to do immediately following a severe storm:

Be Safe

Stay indoors in a safe place till the storm has elapsed.

If your home has suffered major damages, be aware that the damaged area(s) may be structurally compromised and unsturdy.

Be on the lookout and exercise caution, as there may be a potential for loose and falling debris.

Sloped roofs and heights can be dangerous even when you deal with them daily. While we would of course defer to your judgment, it may be wise to pause and give consideration to calling Phoenix right away. We have no problem making your emergency, our emergency.

Stay away from fallen power lines and any conductive materials that the electrical line may be in contact with. High power is extremely dangerous and has the capacity to arc flash.

Document the Damages

Evaluate your home for damage caused by the storm. If possible, take overview pictures of things exactly as they lay before disturbing them. From the ground, some claimable items will be easy to find, while giving you a better way to predict damages to the items you can’t so easily see, like the roof. Look for any small pieces of roofing or other materials that may have fallen to the ground. This could include things such as shingles, chunks of tile, or pieces of flashing, etc.

Broken pieces of roofing material are the clearest evidence of damage to your roof.

Next, take a close look around the perimeter of the house.

If you find dented gutters, dented window wraps, broken or dented siding, damaged decks, fencing, freshly missing paint or stain, it’s very likely that your roof has sustained damage as well. Being the part of the house that faces the sky, the roof takes the brunt of the damage. The sides of the house take hail at sharp glancing angles. If you don’t see damage to the sides of the structure, there still may be heavy damage to the roof.

If you can see the inside of any gutter line, look for fresh shingle granules. Sometimes they can wash down to the ends of your downspouts. These granules are the protective layer of the shingles.

If your roof material is metal, the best way to see damages is in the sunlight from the closest and sharpest angle possible.

Lastly, take a look at the interior of your house for any signs of leaking. If you have an insulated attic, it may be an extraordinarily long time before you notice the damage that’s been accumulating. Check for broken or fractured windows and torn window screens.

Be sure to take pictures from a safe vantage point. Note any hail damage, wind damage, or water damage on both the inside and outside of your house. If any debris or damaged pieces are still present, it’s very helpful to have photographs of that too. It can be pivotal in establishing and verifying a timeline for the insurance company.

We will of course take all the same photos you did, but the closer to the time of the peril, the better.

Protect your property

Take any reasonable precautions (and we emphasize reasonable) to protect your property from further damage. If you have even the slightest doubt that you’re the person to do it, it’s probably best to delegate that task and call a professional at Phoenix. Remember, most insurance policies have provisions for emergency repairs and protections.

Often, storm damage is challenging to assess, and you may not even be aware of it.  That’s why it’s always a good idea to reach out to us after any major weather event and have us perform a thorough property inspection to make sure your home was not compromised.

The untrained eye can often overlook hail damage, and this oversight can lead to water intrusion as time goes on, as well as costly subsequent damage to the structure.

Call Phoenix

After a hailstorm passes, the clock starts ticking. This is because insurance claims for storm related damages must be filed within a certain timeframe. That makes paying close attention to the destructive capabilities of a storm all the more important; if you know the storm was likely to damage your roof, a roof inspection becomes very necessary.

Hailstorms can be a stressful time. These damaging weather events can put families and livelihoods at risk.

We personally understand just how scary it can be to know your roof may be damaged.

That’s why we offer free roof inspections after hailstorms: to give folks the peace of mind that comes with knowing exactly what’s happened to their roof and how to make it good as new again.
